Bill, Dad, Johnnie and me.

Seeing Bill Clinton was amazing. He was charismatic and inspirational...just as you'd expect. But what was more astounding, was that I was there…sitting in a room with some of the most influential attorneys in California, appellate judges and other ritzy movers and shakers...all of them oozing wealth and success. The CEOs and CFOs at my table dazzled with their flashing cuff links, silk ties, and suits that obviously cost more than five months of my rent. As I joked with their gorgeous, diamond clad wives, and drank their expensive wine, I realized, I was more used to being one of the people waiting the tables….and that on Monday, I’d be relegated back to my little office, plugging away at my files, making my own copies...and living my much less glamorous life. But I still drank it in while I could…pretending to belong, as I sat there in my $30.00 dress, hot off the clearance rack of J.C. Penny's. Nodding and smiling at the casual mention of a winter home in Whistler, the summer home in Palm Springs, the shopping trips to Italy, all of this with the smell of expensive perfume in the air, and the Secret Service shuffling quietly in the background.

But the best part of the night, was after the festivities. My Dad turned to the fancy executives who were our hosts, and his co-workers, and said, “Excuse us…. But I have to take my daughter out for a drink.” And there we were, in a quiet swanky bar, sitting next to one another. When the waitress arrived, I ordered a Zinfandel. He ordered a Johnnie Walker Black on the rocks. My eyebrows shot up, and I stopped the waitress, and said… “Wait, I’ll have what he’s having.” And there we were. Me, Dad, and Johnnie.

As I sipped my scotch, I said to him, “You know, I only recently learned to drink scotch.” He shook his silver head at me, and said, “That’s something I should have taught you a long time ago.” And I nodded.

“How long do you think you’ve got to live?” I asked. He held up his hand, and spread his five fingers wide, indicating five more years. And whether it was his diabetes, his "mini-strokes" or his heart, it didn’t matter; the result was the same. “That’s what I thought,” I said. I looked him in the eyes, put my hand on his knee, and said, “I’ve been coming to terms with your death for awhile now, and I figure, if I prepare for it now, then it won’t break me when it happens…do you know how fucked up that is? ”

Then, we spoke of everything; his death, my fear of it, and how I will deal with his passing. We spoke of god, the lack thereof, life and mom. We discussed our family, his choices, and the hereafter…if any there was. Everything I wanted to ever say to him, I did. We talked of his funeral, his refusal to retire, of how I’m afraid mom will go first, and how he's afraid of the same thing.

Over the soft clinking of ice, there was no room for any resentment, frustration or judgment over his choices, or how I was raised. There was only a quiet coming to terms, and learning to be at peace with who he is, who I am, who I am because of him, and how we two have become.

More Brains

I had a conversation with Brad tonight that went a little something like this:

Brad: "Yeah, I got to do a partial autopsy today."
Gigi: "Partial...what do you mean partial?? What part?"
Brad: "Well...just the brain."
Gigi: "What? How did you get it out?"
Brad: "With a saw...what did you think, we used a spoon or something?"
Gigi: "Yeah...but... what were you looking for??"
Brad: "Uggg, gold Gigi...we were looking for gold."
Gigi: "Awesome....did you find any?"

At this point Brad just shook his head and ate the last of the sushi.

But it reminded me of a prior brain-themed blog

Dance of Death

We have a beautiful view from our balcony. It looks over the San Pablo strait...and the Benicia Cemetery. One morning I woke up to Brad yelling, "Oh my god, there's a guy dancing in the cemetery...next to an open grave!!!" So of course I jumped out of bed and grabbed the video camera. I have no idea what this guy was thinking, but he seriously had his groove on.

Three feet of colon and a whole lot of happiness.

You know your first trial is off to a great start when a can of diet coke explodes in your purse during the trial readiness conference… in front of a judge who’s already yelling at you. Maybe it was the pressure that made it explode. Other than the sogginess of my purse, it was a good time.

So, of course I’ve been super busy. I don’t sleep very much, and don’t get home before Brad’s in bed. So it’s nice when I do get home, soggy purse and all, when Brad’s still awake.

Unfortunately our conversations go like this:

Brad: Yeah, we had to ream out the hip, and drill out the femur head. And when you’re doing this, you’re basically wearing a space suit.

And there’s blood everywhere….everywhere! Blood and bone…it gets all over you. Hopefully you’ll never have to have a joint replacement surgery. It’s pretty messy.

Oh…and we pulled out three feet of colon today on a guy. Three feet… and it still wasn’t enough. There’s no pleasing some people.

Me: I cried in my office again today. But then I felt better. But then my soda blew up in my purse at court. Good thing the Bailiff isn’t the nervous, trigger happy type.

Ahhh…good times.

Mormon No More

I guess it's about time I did this. My mom asked that I not seek excommunication until she was dead, even though I've been contemplating the move for years. Mom's still alive, but I just can't stand it anymore. Sorry mom.

Member Records Division, LDS Church

50 E North Temple Rm 1372
SLC UT 84150-5310

This letter is my formal resignation from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and it is effective immediately. I hereby withdraw my consent to being treated as a member and I withdraw my consent to being subject to church rules, policies, beliefs and 'discipline'. As I am no longer a member, I want my name permanently and completely removed from the membership rolls of the church.

The LDS promotion of bigotry in the United States has saddened me, and made me question my fragile association with the church. Recently, I have realized that being “inactive” does not separate me enough from you; I feel tainted by your intolerance, your intrusion into the constitution, your religious rape of civil rights, and your lack of respect for the separation of church and state. Any association with you is now so repellent to my morals and sense of equality that I can hardly live in my own skin knowing that it was once forcefully dipped into your baptismal font of bigotry.

The prejudice of this church was evident during the Civil Rights movement, when your dogma regarding blacks was full of disdain, hatred and intolerance. You have yet to officially repudiate that position. Now that you have again decided to fight against human rights, I have no choice but to remove myself completely.

The Mormon stance on gay rights has appalled me. I don’t care how you define marriage in your temples, churches or doctrine, or what magical panties you wear to legitimize these activities. Hell, you once defined marriage as “a union between a man, and a woman, and a woman, and a woman.” But a civil marriage, one that the government condones and recognizes, should NOT be defined by religious bigotry and fear. Propaganda, paid for and promoted by the church, has stripped a civil right away from a select group of people that you view as undesirable, and this is absolutely unacceptable to me.

My resignation should be processed immediately, without any 'waiting periods'. I am not going to be dissuaded and I am not going to change my mind. I expect this matter to be handled promptly. I expect a letter confirming my resignation.

Sincerely,
me

Transgendered Monster

Missing:

Monster is a six year old fat, yellow, transgendered cat. Other than the fact that Monster is yellow, he has no other distinguishing marks besides his huge fatness. And technically, he isn't really a "he" anymore, since we had to surgically remove his male bits last year due to…never mind…you really don't want to know why. But it was medically necessary…and not at all perverted in any way on our part. Nor was Monster having a sexual identity crisis. But I include this information in case someone finds a hugely obese yellow "girl" cat and thinks they've found their new best friend.

And let me tell you, you don't want to keep this cat. He eats more than a mastiff. And as you can tell by his medical history…he's pretty high maintenance. Who knows when he'll need another plastic surgery! And he only likes a specific type of meow mix (the "fillet meow" beeferloin beefcake kind). He also drags his ass on the carpet whenever he comes out of the litter box. I think this is due to the surgical procedure, since he
never ever did this when he had a penis. So again, you really don't want to keep this cat if you find him. We, on the other hand, love this fat, ass-draggin,' hermaphroditic cat.

Anyways, he went missing after 7:45 am on Tuesday, September 2nd. We are very worried that he is under someone's house. The recent construction guys have been replacing the siding to our condos, and this allows cats to get under the crawlspace. Last week, our other cat was trapped under the condo, and we had to remove the siding to get to him out. So if you hear a ghost-cat meowing like crazy under your floorboards, please call me, or tell the construction crew.

Seriously…I don't know how long he can live if he's trapped under your floorboards. Well…he is gianormously obese, so he could live on his own fat stores for a long time…but eventually, he'll die. And then his gigantic fat carcass will start rotting, and let me tell you, he
already smells bad, just imagine if he dies under your floorboards.

So PLEASE, listen to your floor... if you hear a cat meowing like crazy, and you can't tell where it's coming from, please check to see if it's coming from the crawlspace. I'm sure he'll get louder the hungrier he gets. And he's really not used to going 30 minutes without eating.

and yes...we PLASTERED the condo complex with these fliers.

Found: one gigantic fat ass yellow transgendered cat. At about 4:30 this morning, Brad went out looking for Monster again. And apparently Monster was angry and hungry as all hell because Brad heard him yowling from somewhere. He was trapped under a neighboring condo. I woke up to Brad tapping at the bedroom window requesting a flashlight and a hammer. So at 4:45 am, Brad broke Monster out. I could hear the paneling creaking as Brad pulled it away from the building… Thank god he didn't wake our neighbors up. If they had looked out their bedroom window, they would have seen Brad, hammer in one hand, flashlight in the other, crouching under the building, trying to coax a 25 lb Monster out from under their house. He ate his head off when he got back in the house. Monster, not Brad. Thanks for your well wishes!!

The More You Know....

Thanks to Brad...today I learned that...apparently...I have more than one sphincter.

This was news to me. And of course, Brad took it upon himself to educate me...about sphincters

And so... for a moment tonight on the couch...Brad was like Bubba from Forrest Gump...talkin' shrimp.

Except Brad was...uh...talkin' sphincters: "well you've got about forty different sphincters...let's see....you've got your upper esophageal sphincter, your lower esophageal sphincter, epiglottis...which is a sphincter, pyloric sphincter, urethral sphincter, your sphincter pupillae…now that sphincter is basically the iris of your eye..."

Thanks Brad. You've made my night... I had no idea that there was a sphincter in my eye.
